This month at Drupal Yorkshire we had a meeting to discuss and decide on the future direction of the group. Everybody was keen to maintain the frequency of one per month and our new venue at the ODI Leeds.
We had a group discussion to talk about the different ways in which we work with Drupal and what each of us would like to get from our meetings going forward.
The most obvious and immediate take out was that this is not a developer's meet-up group but much more a community of diverse users with a wide range of skills and knowledge to be shared. Developers, Themers, Site Builders, Admin Users, Content Editors, Managers, Freelancers, Consultants...
More detailed notes are below but the outcome was a new proposed format for the meetup as follows:
6:30 - 6:45 > Arrivals
6:45 - 7:00 > Announcements
7:00 - 7:30 - > Speaker/Presentation/Tutorial - slides and notes to be shared after
7:30 - 7:45 > Q&A
7:45 - 8:30 > Clinic - put your questions to the group for help and feedback, bring your site for us to have a look at.
Notes from discussion
These notes should give you a good indication of the many sorts of people you are likely to find at a Drupal Yorkshire meet-up.
Simon - Calderdale Council
Calderdale are almost a year into a project to migrate their website and intranet to Drupal. He would like to like members of his technical team to attend the group to talk about about their work and get insights from some of the group members who would be may have completed similar tasks in the past.
Sacha - Epilepsy Action
Epilepsy Action are a National charity running a Drupal site hosted and supported by our friends at IXIS, as an organisation they are looking for greater autonomy and control of their site and less reliance on IXIS for day to day support and development tasks. He would like to use the group to discuss any problems or issues he is having and learn more about best practice in site building and theming.
Dan - OS Training
Dan is head of Drupal support at OS Training. In the past 18 months he has probably encountered and solved almost every sort of problem anyone is likely to run into with a Drupal site. He is looking to help people with development, hosting and site building issues as well as being able to use the group to as a venting platform when his own projects are not going according to plan.
Dan - First 10
Dan is Head of Tech at First 10 a Leeds based marketing and digital agency. He has been working with Drupal for over 5 years and looking to upskill his new (mostly wordpress) Team in Drupal. He is also the main organiser of the group. He wants to grow the Leeds Drupal community, specifically he’d like to encourage more developers to attend on a regular basis and increase the number of speakers we have.
Sue - Freelance
Sue is a graphic designer and Wordpress themer looking to learn more about Drupal and expand her skillset as a Drupal site builder and themer. She would like to see more show and tell speakers of all levels as well as tutorials from more experienced developers and themers.
Nicola - Permaculture Association
The permaculture association are a national charity based in Leeds. They are in the process of upgrading their Drupal 6 website and incorporating into it a number of standalone microsites. She is looking to learn more about best practise and sound out the group for input and feedback on proposed projects and plans. Also really interested in learning more about web design in general especially CSS
Crispin - User Crunch
I have been developing with Drupal for over 10 years and help run the Drupal apprentice scheme that is coming to Leeds ithis summer. I am looking to strengthen the offline and online community in the area and also hope to recruit mentors and placement companies for the apprenticeship scheme.
